Marine conservation

Our hands on approach to Marine Conservation will lead to the better protection of two important sites on are doorstep, we have ownership of this problem because we are the logical choice as the local dive club.
The Jenny grounds 500 metres of shore at millionaires row,, is a natural reef formation which harbours superb habitat for juvenile and breeding fish, also because it is relatively shallow it offers good light levels for sustaining plant life and soft corals, truly a fishy oasis in a heavily trawled area.
The second site out a bit further and deeper is a 3m high chalk wall that runs parallel with the shoreline from Brighton to Worthing.

The threatened area from bottom trawling is only approximately 50 metres wide but extends several miles , the rest having already been raked flat by bottom trawling. This chalk wall habitat is very rare and as now is only 1 of 2 known in the country , this is perfect habitat for fish and coral, all at risk from reckless fishing practices, can you imagine a farmer treating the land the way we treat are sea bed without a thought for future harvest.

This area has been proposed by local conservation groups for protection within the new balanced seas proposals but rejected by fishermen in favour of a voluntary no take zone, we don't believe this is good enough.
This is what we do , this is our back yard , as trained sea search observers we collect information , record numbers and species and log habitat type and damage, this information is collected nationally and used to highlight areas that need conservation.

We also aim to help monitor the no take zone by talking to fishermen ,providing information and maintaining a buoyed area.
We shall also endeavour to collect plastic waste , litter and lost fishing tackle from this area.
In affect we want to take care of this patch of sea.

Get Involved , come and dive with us, train with us, maybe contribute or just send an email to give us support, but most of all be informed, the sea belongs to all of us and we need to take care of it.
